The Sozahdahs (Exclusive) Celeb Secrets

Publish date: 2024-06-23

Nothing says sisters like some secrets and conflict.

Brought to us by Hulu, the compelling unscripted series, Secrets & Sisterhood: The Sozahdahs, chronicles the lives of 10 Muslim American sisters — Shaista, Halimah, Khadija, Rabya, Shakur, Muzlefa, Jamila, Siddiqa, Nooreya and Hamida Sozahdah — capturing their authentic experiences filled with unexpected revelations. As they strive to balance cultural norms, careers, and love in Los Angeles, their faith and relationships are pushed to their limits.

The Sozahdah sisters firmly abide by the principle of “family over everything,” yet when their closely guarded secrets are exposed and the very television show intended to unite them becomes a source of division, their unity hangs in the balance.

“The camera is literally a fly on the wall,” Siddiqa Sozahdah tells Celeb Secrets reporter Jasmine Vazquez exclusively during a virtual junket. “We had to wear so many different hats with the elder sisters it’s like ‘oh be more conservative,’ in front of mom it’s like ‘ok you have to pray, you can’t miss a prayer’ and then with the wolf pack it’s like ‘yo bring out the shots.’ You just kind of have to have all these hats you have to wear.”

Throughout the season, the sisters showcase the difficulties of being part of such a big family with a different cultural background — even within their own household. The divide can be a bit eminent at times between the first four sisters, often referred to as “the elders,” whom who were all born in Afghanistan compared to the rest of the sisters who are more westernized and American born, and referred to as “the wolf pack.”

“This is our journey we’re not representing a whole religion, we’re not representing a whole Afghan community,” says Khadija. “This is our story.”

While breaking the norms and stepping out within their family morals can be quite difficult to navigate, the power of sisterhood and bond of family will always persevere.

But aside from all the family drama, Rabya discusses that the series effectively portrays a significant amount of vulnerability and challenges experienced among the sisters and within their respective personal lives.

“I hope the world will embrace us as progressive Afghan American women and understand that we are not trying to be representative of all Muslim people, of all Afghans and truly we are just sharing our truths and our journey as children of refugee parents and really that American Dream.”
