Auburn Regional

Friday’s Games:

Game 1: Samford 4, Southern Mississippi 2 (10)

Tanner Hall dazzled in what may have been his final collegiate start, allowing only one earned run across nine innings with nine strikeouts. Hall threw 123 pitches, 80 of which were strikes. The score remained tied at one until Joshua Rodriguez belted a go-ahead solo home run in the top half of the 10th inning. The Bulldogs added two key insurance runs thanks to a Garrett Staton RBI double and Stephen Klein sac-fly. Workhorse reliever Ben Petschke allowed one run across four strong innings in relief.

Game 2: Pennsylvania 6, Auburn 3 (11)

It took 11 innings, but Penn knocked off 13th overall seed Auburn 6-3. The Tigers had a 2-1 lead going into the eighth inning, but Penn catcher Jackson Appel crushed a go-ahead, two-run home run to give the Quakers a late 3-2 advantage. Auburn would tie the game in the bottom half of the inning after a Brody Moss bases-loaded walk, and the score would remain deadlocked at three until the top of the 11th. Ryan Taylor laced a go-ahead RBI double into the gap to give Penn a 4-3 lead, and the Quakers laid down three straight bunts, including two safety squeezes, to extend their lead to 6-3.

Southern Mississippi took down Auburn 7-2 to eliminate the Tigers on their own field. Dustin Dickerson went 2-for-5 with a pair of solo home runs, Danny Lynch went 2-for-3 with a home run, and Christopher Sargent belted his 50th career home run. Will Armistead was strong in relief, firing 3.1 shutout innings and collecting a trio of strikeouts.

Game 2: Pennsylvania 5, Samford 4

The Quakers held on to beat Samford 5-4 to advance to the regional final. Cole Zaffiro turned in his best start of the season, throwing eight innings in which he allowed two runs, collected eight strikeouts and walked none. Ben Miller led the way offensively, going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI singles and Wyatt Henseler went 2-for-4 with an RBI double. Cole Palis also contributed an RBI single. Sunday’s Games:

Game 1: Southern Miss 9, Samford 4 (Samford eliminated)

The Golden Eagles used a four run sixth inning to propel themselves to the regional final. Nick Monistere and Matthew Etzel each had two-run hits in the inning, while Rodrigo Montenegro and Slade Wilks provided two key insurance runs on a pair of sac-flies. After a tough start by Matthew Adams, Kros Sivley (4 IP) and Chandler Dawson (2 IP) combined to allow just one run across the final six innings.

Game 2: Southern Miss 11, Pennsylvania 2

The final score of this one was not indicative of how close the game was, as Southern Miss exploded for eight runs in the ninth inning. The Golden Eagles again trailed late into the game, but took a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning thanks to a Carson Paetow Little League home run. Five different Golden Eagle hitters drove in a run in the ninth with the exclamation point being a Dustin Dickerson three-run home run. The story of the game, however, was Justin Storm’s performance out of the bullpen. The towering lefthander fired 5.2 shutout innings, struck out 10, walked none, and allowed just one hit. Southern Miss today takes on Penn in a winner-take-all game.

Monday’s Games:

Game 1: Southern Miss 11, Pennsylvania 7 (Pennsylvania eliminated)

The Golden Eagles knocked off the Quakers 11-7 to complete their 4-0 run through the losers’ bracket and advance to super regionals. Penn took a 5-1 lead after a three-run top of the fourth inning, but Southern Miss punched back with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. With the game tied at five in the bottom of the sixth inning, shortstop Dustin Dickerson hammered a three-run home run, his 10th of the season, to give the Golden Eagles the lead for good. Penn hung around and made it a one-run game in the seventh, but Carson Paetow clubbed a two-run double to give the Golden Eagles a pair of key insurance runs and an 11-7 lead. While Penn’s season came to an end, it was a remarkable run for the Quakers who won two games in their first tournament appearance since 1995.

Baton Rouge Regional

Friday’s Games:

Game 1: LSU 7, Tulane 2

Paul Skenes was magnificent in his start, as he allowed only two earned runs in a complete game effort. He struck out 12, walked none and held his premium velocity for the entirety of his outing; the 124th (and final) pitch of his outing was a 101 mph fastball.

Potential No. 1 overall pick Dylan Crews went 3-for-5 with an RBI double, while Hayden Travinski went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.

Game 2: Oregon State 18, Sam Houston State 2

Trent Sellers was outstanding on the mound as he gave up two runs on three hits across 7.1 innings pitched.

Sunday’s Games:

Game 1: Sam Houston State 10, Tulane 2 (Tulane eliminated)

In what was a resumption of Saturday’s suspended game, Sam Houston State cruised to a 10-2 win over Tulane. Joe Redfield and Josh Wishkoski each blasted three-run home runs, while starter Steven Beard allowed one earned run across six innings pitched. While the Green Wave’s season came to an end, it was a remarkable run for Coach Uhlman’s bunch.

Game 2: LSU 6, Oregon State 5

The Tigers trailed 3-0 in the fourth inning, but would go on to score the next five runs en route to a hard-fought victory. Potential No. 1 overall pick Dylan Crews got the scoring started with a two-run home run, while Hayden Travinski, Cade Beloso, Josh Pearson, and Brayden Jobert followed suit with long balls of their own. Jobert’s eighth-inning blast proved to be the game-winner as Gavin Guidry was able to slam the door with a shutout ninth inning.

Game 3: Oregon State 3, Sam Houston State 1 (Sam Houston State eliminated)

In the final game of the day, Oregon State took down the Bearkats 3-1 to end their season. The extent of the Beavers’ offense came in a three-run fourth inning in which Mikey Kane roped an RBI double and Brady Kasper hit a two-RBI single. Aiden Jimenez was outstanding in relief, throwing six shutout innings with six strikeouts against zero walks. Oregon State today will need to beat host LSU twice in order to advance to the super regional round.

Monday’s Games:

Game 1: LSU 13, Oregon State 7 (Oregon State eliminated)

The Tigers downed the Beavers 13-7 to advance to their third super regional in the last four seasons. They scored 12 runs between the fourth and seventh innings and like their first game with Oregon State, the majority of their offensive production came by way of the long ball. Dylan Crews, Cade Beloso, Hayden Travinski, and Gavin Dugas all hit home runs, while Josh Pearson went 2-for-5 with a two-run triple. Lefthander Riley Cooper got the start and turned in a strong 3.2 innings pitched. He struck out four, walked two, and allowed two earned runs.

Charlottesville Regional

Brian Edgington needed just 56 pitches (42 strikes) to get through five perfect innings on the mound.

Joey Berini went 4-for-5 with a double and two RBIs, Carter Cunningham went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs and Justin Wilcoxen went 2-for-5 with a double, a home run and two RBIs. Oklahoma toppled Army 10-1 to end the Black Knights’ season. Bryce Madron went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and four RBIs, while Wallace Clark went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. Braxton Douthit threw a complete game and allowed just four hits to go along with seven strikeouts.

Game 2: Virginia 2, East Carolina 1

The Cavaliers defeated the Pirates 2-1 in what was a well-played game on both sides. Virginia got the scoring started in the third inning thanks to an RBI single by Kyle Teel, but ECU would eventually tie it in the sixth on a Ryley Johnson RBI single. However, in the bottom of the seventh, Virginia would take the lead for good on an RBI single into shallow right field off the bat of Ethan Anderson. Nick Parker allowed one earned run on five hits across his seven innings pitched and 6-foot-10 lefthander Jake Berry slammed the door with two perfect innings.

Sunday’s Games:

Game 1: East Carolina 8, Oklahoma 5 (Oklahoma eliminated)

The Pirates cruised to an 8-5 victory over Oklahoma, thus ending the Sooners’ season. It was a balanced attack for ECU offensively as six different players drove in at least one run. Cam Clonch and Josh Moylan led the way with two RBIs apiece, while Moylan set a new single-season AAC RBI record in the process.

Game 2: Virginia 8, East Carolina 3 (East Carolina eliminated)

The hosts trailed 2-1 heading into the seventh inning, but went on to score three runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to clinch a super regional berth. The Cavaliers’ six runs came on a pair of three-run home runs as both Ethan O’Donnell and Anthony Stephan went deep. Potential first round draft pick Kyle Teel gave UVA a key insurance run with a solo home run in the ninth inning to extend its lead to 8-3. Army transfer Connelly Early was great in his start, allowing one earned run and striking out 10 across his 6.1 innings pitched.

Clemson Regional

Friday’s Games:

Game 1: Clemson 12, Lipscomb 5

This game was much closer than the final score indicates as Clemson led by a slim 6-5 margin heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. The Tigers would tack on one run in the inning, but proceeded to explode for six runs in the bottom of the eighth to extend their lead to 12-5. Caden Grice went 2-for-2 with a double, a home run, and three RBIs, while red-hot Billy Amick belted a grand slam and drove in five runs of his own.

Game 2: Tennessee 8, Charlotte 1

The Volunteers coasted to an 8-1 win over Charlotte. Jake Dragum and Brandon Stahlman each went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a home run, while Eli Weisner went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run. Junior righthander Wyatt Hudepohl was excellent in his eight innings pitched as he allowed only two earned runs and struck out 11.

Sunday’s Games:

Game 1: Charlotte 3, Clemson 2 (Clemson eliminated)

In what was perhaps the most shocking result of the tournament to this point, Charlotte toppled Clemson 3-2 to eliminate the Tigers. Clemson took an early 2-0 lead, but the 49ers hung around and eventually took the lead for good in the seventh inning. Will Butcher crushed a game-tying home run to right-centerfield, while Jake Dragum delivered the game-winning RBI single. Both Donye Evans and Paxton Thompson were exceptional out of the bullpen as they combined to throw seven shutout innings with 11 strikeouts to close the game.

Game 2: Tennessee 9, Charlotte 2 (Charlotte eliminated)

Following a thrilling 14-inning win over Clemson the night before, the Volunteers had all day to lock in for the regional final. They led just 1-0 in the fourth inning, but scored at least one run in four of the next five innings to wear out the 49ers. Christian Moore led the way offensively going 2-for-2 with two home runs and four RBIs, while Christian Scott went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Drew Beam allowed two earned runs in his six innings pitched to go along with 10 strikeouts and zero walks.

Freshman sensation Ethan Petry went 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs, Gavin Casas went a perfect 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs and Michael Braswell went 2-for-6 with a three-run double. James Hicks was outstanding in his start, tossing five shutout innings in which he allowed one hit and struck out six.

Saturday’s Games:

Game 1: Campbell 10, Central Connecticut 5 (Central Connecticut eliminated)

Central Connecticut had a 5-0 lead into the seventh inning, but the Campbell bats woke up and exploded for five runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to pull in front 10-5. Bryce Arnold in the seventh inning belted a game-tying grand slam, while in the eighth inning Jarrod Belbin hit an opposite field, three-run home run.

Ty Cummings (1.1), Jackson Roberts (1.0) and Aaron Rund (1.0) combined for three shutout innings to slam the door and eliminate the Blue Devils.

Game 2: South Carolina 6, North Carolina State 3

South Carolina doubled up NC State 6-3 to improve to 2-0 in regional play. Braylen Wimmer got the scoring started with a two-run home run in the third inning, and the Gamecocks would eventually stretch their lead to 5-0 in the fifth thanks to a bases-loaded walk and a pair of RBI singles courtesy of Gavin Casas and Michael Braswell. The Wolfpack had the tying run at the plate in the ninth, but Chris Veach recorded the final two outs to clinch the victory.

Sunday’s Games:

Game 1: Campbell 11, North Carolina State 1 (North Carolina State eliminated)

Jarrod Belbin led the game off with his 21st home run of the season, and the Camels never looked back as they took an 8-0 lead by the fourth inning and coasted to a resounding 11-1 win. Grant Knipp went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run, Bryce Arnold went 3-for-6 with an RBI, and Drew Winters hit a two-run home run. Chance Daquila had to deal with traffic on the base paths for the entirety of his seven-inning outing, but managed to allow just one earned run.

Game 2: South Carolina 16, Campbell 7 (Campbell eliminated)

Following a brutal last month and a half, South Carolina has appeared to revert back to its midseason form. The Gamecocks yesterday comfortably beat a really strong Campbell team to cap off a perfect 3-0 weekend and advance to super regional play. The Camels took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the Gamecocks scored the next nine runs, including seven in the third inning alone, and never looked back. Talmadge LeCroy paced the offense, going  3-for-4 with a double and five RBIs, while Braylen Wimmer went 4-for-5 with a home run. Will Sanders closed the game for the Gamecocks and fired three shutout innings in which he collected six strikeouts.

Conway Regional

Game 2: Rider 11, Coastal Carolina 10 (10)

In what was the most exciting game of Friday’s slate, Rider upset 10th overall seed Coastal Carolina 11-10 in 10 innings. Coastal looked to be on its way to a comfortable win as it led 5-0 heading into the seventh inning after six no-hit innings from starter Liam Doyle, but the Broncs exploded for nine runs in the inning thanks to four RBI singles and a pair of run-scoring doubles. The Chanticleers tied the game in the ninth inning thanks to a Nick Lucky sac-fly and had all the momentum, but Rider responded with two runs in the 10th inning to take an 11-9 lead. John Volpe laced the go-ahead RBI single.

Coastal cut the Rider lead to just one run and had the bases loaded with two outs in the ninth inning, but Richie Sica made a sensational game-saving diving catch to end the game and give Rider its first NCAA Tournament win since 1987.

Saturday’s Games:

Game 1: Coastal Carolina 12, UNC Wilmington 2 (UNC Wilmington eliminated)

The Chanticleers responded to Friday night’s brutal loss with a 12-2 shellacking of UNCW. Coastal scored four runs in the first inning thanks to a Graham Brown grand slam and never looked back. Redshirt sophomore Riley Eikhoff went the distance, collecting six strikeouts and walking none.

Rider gave Duke all it could handle, but in the end the Blue Devils came out on top with a 2-1 win to advance to the regional final. Jay Beshears belted a solo home run in the first to put Duke up 1-0, which is where the score stood until a Luke Lesch sac-fly tied the game in the sixth inning. With the score tied at one in the ninth inning, Damon Lux lifted a fly ball to center field that was just deep enough to score the speedy Giovanni DiGiacomo to put the Blue Devils up 2-1. Rider threatened with runners on second and third in the bottom of the ninth, but Fran Oschell notched a huge strikeout to end the game.

Sunday’s Games:

Game 1: Coastal Carolina 13, Rider 5 (Rider eliminated)

Coastal Carolina avenged its Friday night loss to Ride with a resounding 13-5 win. Payton Eeles went 3-for-5 with a home run and five RBIs, while Chad Born went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs. While their season came to an end, it was a remarkable run for the Broncs who both won the MAAC and notched a regional win.

Game 2: Coastal Carolina 8, Duke 6

In front of an electric home crowd, the Chanticleers downed the Blue Devils 8-6 to force a winner-take-all game with a trip to super regionals on the line. Graham Brown started the game in impressive fashion, crushing his second first-inning grand slam in as many days. However Duke responded with a haymaker of its own as Damon Lux crushed a grand slam out to left field to give the Blue Devils a 5-4 lead. After a Payton Eels double tied the game at five, it was not until a Caden Bodine go-ahead triple in the seventh inning that either team took the lead again. Derek Bender came through with two key insurance runs as he launched a two-run home run deep into the Conway night. Lights out closer Teddy Sharkey sealed the win with 1.2 shutout innings in relief.

Mitchell Daly went 1-for-2 and hit the game-tying home run, while Dylan Campbell went 2-for-4 with a two-run double. With his two-hit day, Campbell extended his hitting streak to a whopping 36 games, which is a new Big 12 record. The Ragin’ Cajuns exploded to score 19 runs on 17 hits to take down Maine, 19-10. Star shortstop Kyle DeBarge went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs, Connor Higgs went 2-for-4 with a home run and Carson Roccaforte also hit a home run. All nine Louisiana starters notched at least one hit. In a game where quality pitching was difficult to come by, Louisiana’s David Christie was a bright spot: he tossed 1.2 perfect innings to close the game.

Game 2: Texas 4, Miami 1

Texas knocked off Miami 4-1 to advance to the regional final. Dylan Campbell extended his hitting streak to 37 games with a two-run home run in the first inning, and the Longhorns eventually built their lead up to 4-0 thanks to a Jack O’Dowd solo home run and a Jalin Flores run-scoring single. Four runs was more than enough for Lebarron Johnson Jr., who was sensational on the mound. He threw a complete game in which he allowed just one earned run and struck out eight.

Sunday’s Games:

Game 1: Miami 8, Louisiana 5 (Louisiana eliminated)

With their backs against the wall, the Hurricanes knocked off the Ragin’ Cajuns 8-5 to keep their season alive. Saturday’s Games:

Game 1: Santa Clara 9, Arizona 3 (Arizona eliminated)

Due to unsettled weather, just one game was played in Fayetteville Saturday. Santa Clara handled Arizona 9-3 to eliminate the Wildcats. Santa Clara was in control of the game from the start, scoring one run in each of the first three innings. Eamonn Lance (3-for-4) and Michael O’Hara (2-for-4) each had multiple hits and a home run, while Efrain Manzo blasted his 18th home run of the season. Manzo’s 18 home runs are the most by a Santa Clara player since Gene Delyon‘s 19 long balls in 1974. Cade Pilchard spun a quality start as over the course of six innings, he allowed one run on just three hits.

Sunday’s Games:

Game 1: TCU 20, Arkansas 5

The Horned Frogs dismantled Arkansas 20-5 to advance to the regional final. The result of this one was never in doubt as TCU batted around in the first inning and put up six runs. However the story of the game was Tre Richardson’s historic performance. The junior second baseman went 5-for-6 with three home runs, including two grand slams, and drove in 11 runs. Star third baseman Brayden Taylor had a great day of his own, going 4-for-6 with a home run and four RBIs. His home run upped his total to an impressive 23 on the season, and he is now one long ball away from setting a new single-season program record.

Game 2: Arkansas 6, Santa Clara 4 (Santa Clara eliminated)

The Razorbacks quickly erased the result of their shellacking and bounced back to defeat Santa Clara 6-4 in the nightcap. Arkansas jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first thanks to a Jace Bohrofen RBI double and Ben McLaughlin sac-fly. It took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning, but Santa Clara scored three runs to make it a 4-3 game. It remained a one run game until the eighth inning, but Kendall Diggs walloped a 95 mph fastball off the scoreboard for a two-run home run. Will McEntire (2.2 IP) and Hunter Hollan (0.2 IP) combined to allow only one earned runs across their 3.1 innings pitched. Arkansas today will need to beat TCU twice in order to advance to super regional play.

Monday’s Games:

Game 1: TCU 12, Arkansas 4 (Arkansas eliminated)

Unlike its first game against Arkansas, TCU came from behind in the later innings to eliminate the No. 3 overall seed. The Razorbacks led 5-4 in the sixth inning, but Austin Davis, who hit a two-run single earlier in the game, belted a go-ahead, two-run home run. Davis’ big swing rubbed off on the rest of the Horned Frogs, as they scored nine runs between the sixth and eighth innings. Kurtis Byrne enjoyed a strong day offensively, going 4-for-5 with two home runs, a double, and two RBIs, while Tre Richardson hit his fourth home run of the regional. Prior to postseason play, Richardson had hit just two home runs on the year. He was named MVP of the Fayetteville Regional after going 9-for-15 with two doubles, four home runs, and 14 RBIs.

Gainesville Regional

 Game 2: Florida 3, Florida A&M 0

This one was not the blowout that many expected it to be, as Florida A&M was in the game for all nine innings. Jac Caglianone continued his excellent stretch on the mound, throwing six shutout innings with seven strikeouts.

Saturday’s Games:

Game 1: UConn 9, Florida A&M 6 (Florida A&M eliminated)

The game was tied at five in the eighth inning, but UConn took an 8-5 lead after a Paul Tammaro squeeze bunt and a Ben Huber two-run home run. On a day where their pitching was inconsistent, Justin Willis was a bright spot for the Huskies as he fired a 1-2-3 ninth inning to seal the victory. While it went 0-2, Florida A&M played well in each of its two games in Gainesville and was anything but a pushover for its opponents.

Game 2: Texas Tech 5, Florida 4

Texas Tech beat Florida 5-4 in exciting fashion to advance to the Gainesville regional final. The Gators trailed 3-1 in the sixth inning but superstar sophomore Jac Caglianone hit a two-run home run, his 29th of the year, to tie the game.
